When it comes to cleaning suede footwear, the old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” definitely applies.
Treating suede shoes and boots with a protective spray when you first get them will help to repel water and prevent stains.
If you haven’t pre-treated and you notice they are in need of a clean, read the manufacturer’s directions regarding cleaning. Not all suede is created equal. Some suede shoes are made of synthetic material so always read the directions first. If you can clean them yourself, there are suede care kits available for purchase. They usually include a cleaner, a protector, a suede brush, and a suede eraser.
- Using the suede brush, brush the boots in one direction to brush out the dirt and fluff up the nap. If the shoes/boots aren’t too dirty, this may be good enough to bring them back to life.
- For stubborn stains and deeply embedded dirt, use the suede eraser which will crumble as you rub it against the surface of your suede footwear.
- When you are done, give the shoes/boots a final brush and treat them with a protective spray so that you’ll have less cleaning to do next time.
